On Friday, members of the Lumbee Tribe approved a gaming ordinance that could pave the way for a casino along I-95.

According to a press release, council members approved the ordinance in a 14-2 vote. The ordinance could allow class III gaming, known as “casino-style” gambling, on Lumbee Tribe lands if the tribe and the state authorize it through a compact.

The Lumbees have a proposed resort and development that includes two hotels, a museum and heritage center, a casino, a convention and entertainment center, condos and a golf course. Renderings of the proposed casino were released months earlier.

“The Tribal Council has done its duty by carefully considering this ordinance, listening to our citizens, and making the decisions necessary to move the process forward,” said Alex Baker, Lumbee Tribal Council speaker. “Now, this question belongs to the Lumbee People.”

According to the council, Chairman John Lowery has 10 days to certify any ordinance that affects fundamental rights.

In June, council leaders voted down an amendment that would “clear the way” for a future casino in Robeson County. At the time, Lowery said the Lumbee Tribe would pursue gaming if it passed.
