CARY, N.C. — A 2-point conversion was the difference in a scrimmage between Middle Creek and #25 Southern Durham at the HighSchoolOT Jamboree on Monday. The Mustangs scored with 2:32 remaining but failed on a conversion to tie the game. As a result, Southern Durham claimed the 8-6 win.

The HighSchoolOT Jamboree at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park is brought to you by State Employees Credit Union, Talk it Out NC, the United States Army, and Wake Orthopaedics.

The event features 10 high-profile programs from around the state: Union Pines, Hunt, J.H. Rose, #19 Rolesville, #9 Southeast Raleigh, #22 Wake Forest, #7 Cardinal Gibbons, #4 Millbrook, Middle Creek, and #25 Southern Durham.

Hunt and Union Pines played on Saturday, Aug. 8, as did J.H. Rose. The Rampants had limited field time in a matchup with Rolesville that lasted just six minutes on Saturday before the jamboree was postponed due to inclement weather. The remaining seven teams returned to Cary for the makeup games on Monday.

Southern Durham and Middle Creek played two 20-minute halves with running clock. For additional differing rules, read here.

Reigning 6A runner-up Middle Creek opened the game at a breakneck pace. No huddles, no problem for the Mustangs which blazed down the field on their first drive with quarterback Lex Sevilla connecting with Nicolas Bocciardi. However a fumble at the Southern Durham-30 forced by Spartan defensive end Kye Johnson late in the drive cost Middle Creek 17 yards and a chance to score.

On its first drive, Southern Durham quarterback and 3-star Duke quarterback Jonathan Dillon was swamped in the pocket. As the problems continued up front, defensive penalties allowed Southern Durham to hold onto possession, but not for long.

Once MCHS regained possession, Sevilla helped push the ball up field with some on-point passes to senior receiver Nicholas Belcher. With time winding down in the first half, Middle Creek got into the red zone and was facing 4th-and-11. However, Duke commit Lance Henderson batted Sevilla’s pass attempt away to stall the drive and bring up a scoreless halftime.

East Carolina commit Kamari Holloway started to shoulder the Southern Durham offense in the second half with a 16-yard breakaway run midway through the second half. That drive ended with a 15-yard rushing touchdown by Holloway with 8:30 to play. A 2-point conversion was good on the pass from Dillon to Holloway.

Sevilla was serving on the retaliation. Eventually, he found Bocciardi on an unlikely rollout play. The 13-yard TD put Middle Creek in a position to tie the game, but failed on the conversion and fell 8-6.
