CORNELIUS, N.C. --  Championships are not won on the first day of competition, but they are formed.

Ardrey Kell's first match of the new year was something to build upon.

The No. 15 Knights got a confidence-building win to kick off the 2026 season with a 2-1 win at No. 10 Hough on Monday night.

Down 1-0 at halftime, Ardrey Kell (1-0) scored twice in the second half to rally and win, the last game-winner coming as junior Logan Staffon found the net with just 1:56 left.

Hough (0-1, 0-0 Greater Charlotte 7A/8A) started the scoring in the 31st minute as senior forward Sam Markwell scored on an assist from sophomore defenseman Miles Helfrich.

Senior Josh Goldsmith from Kell leveled on a penalty from the spot in the second half, setting up a chance for Staffon to win it.

Ardrey Kell will next host Topsail on Friday evening. Hough is looking to rebound with a win at Pine Lake Prep on Wednesday night.
