'I do not condone what I did' | Wilson courthouse shooting suspect breaks silence

The man accused of shooting a woman and two law enforcement officers outside the Wilson County Courthouse spoke in court Friday during his first appearance for six addintional felony charges related to the incident.

Abdul Mustafa, 21, chose to address the court, saying:

"I'm not avoiding accountability for what I did, but I would like to let the public know my act on Monday is not a reflection of who I am as a person, of course, people should be judged by their actions. I do not condone what I did. It was an impulsive choice (...) that does not represent me (...) as an individual. It's a product of heavy emotion and irrational thinking and I am not avoiding the repercussions that I will receive from the court, but I do wish to reform myself moving forward no matter how things end up."

Mustafa was charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, in addition to charges of attempted first degree murder, going armed to terror of the public, discharging a firearm in city limits and three counts of damage to real property.

The judge denied bond for Mustafa due to him being an "extreme flight risk" and "a threat to the public."

Following Mustafa's court appearance, Wilson County Sheriff Calvin Hill Woodard, Jr. talked to WRAL.

"What it appeared to be was that he was kind of admitting to the crime," said Sheriff Woodard. "I never had someone in the tyle of crimes in which this was actually stand up and admit to the crime in open court."

The Wilson County Sheriff's Office said Mustafa shot a woman in retaliation for a June 23 shooting on Spruce Street that left 16-year-old LaDarrius Simmons dead. According to the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, the woman, Latoya Lucas, is the sister of the person charged in Simmons’ death

It remains unclear what connection Mustafa has to that case, but Sheriff Woodard said Monday’s shooting appeared to be an act of revenge.

Deputies said Mustafa had waited outside the courthouse for over an hour and avoided showing his face to security cameras while he waited outside for Lucas. Two more people, Terrie Covington and Ja'lexis Applewhite, were also charged with felony accessory before the fact.
