Pair bought Pokémon cards with stolen ID, tried to resell them, warrant says

Two people with out-of-state addresses are facing felony charges in a Wake County Pokémon card scheme.

Xinyi Lin, 27, and Dongwei Lin, 30, were arrested on Wednesday. They are charged with felony conspiracy, identity theft, obtaining property by false pretenses and financial card fraud. 

Arrest warrants say the two conspired to steal $12,000 worth of Pokémon cards from Triangle Area Trading Cards in Cary. Court documents said they used a stolen credit or debit card belonging to a man named Mike Smith.

According to the documents, Xinyi attempted to sell the stolen cards back to the store. Investigators said this happened over a six-month period and had a value of over $500.

Xinyi Lin has a Centerville, Va., address and Dongwei Lin carries a Brooklyn, New York, address.

Triangle Area Trading Cards posted on Instagram on Thursday afternoon. The store's co-owner, Adam Reynolds, said they were targeted by an organized crime unit up and down the East Coast. He included photos of the recent arrests.

The store also had an approximately $45,000 worth of products stolen during a break-in in May.
