Pedestrian killed after suspected hit-and-run crash on I-40

A pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle near an on-ramp from I-440 onto I-40 westbound.

The crash closed several lanes on Thursday morning as authorities responded.

The person was hit by a vehicle around 2:30 a.m. The crash shut down some westbound lanes of I-40 as police investigated.

Police said the driver left the scene without stopping. They are now searching for that driver. 

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker arrived to find several police vehicles stationed near the Cary Towne Boulevard Exit around 3:30 a.m. Officers could be seen around a sheet lying in the road. 

Around 6:20 a.m., the area around the crash reopened to traffic.
