SBI: More felony charges for man accused of vengeance-fueled courthouse shooting in Wilson

The man accused of shooting a woman and two law enforcement officers outside a Wilson courthouse earlier this week is now facing a slew of new charges for state investigators.

According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, 21-year-old Abdul Mustafa is facing six new felony charges for his role in the shooting on Monday, including:

• 4 counts of attempted murder.
• 2 counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Mustafa was already in jail after police officers said he shot a woman on in retaliation for a shooting at the end of June that killed a 16-year-old LaDarrius Simmons on Spruce Street. According to the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, the woman, Latoya Lucas, is the sister of the suspect who was charged in that shooting.

It remains unclear what connection Mustafa has to that case, but Wilson County Sheriff Calvin Woodard said Monday’s shooting appeared to be an act of revenge.

Deputies said Mustafa had waited outside the courthouse for over an hour and avoided showing his face to security cameras while he waited outside for Lucas. Two more people, Terrie Covington and Ja'lexis Applewhite, where also charged with felony accessory before the fact.

Kimberly Simmons, LaDarrius's mom, condemned the shooting at the courthouse.

“I just want justice done the legal way for my son,” Simmons said. “I don’t want no violence going on, on either side of the family, their side or my side. I just want justice to be served for my son the legal way. Let the courthouse and the police do their job. All of this other stuff is uncalled for. I just wanted to bury my baby and let the courts do what they got to do. That’s it.”
