NC superintendent wants to hear from parents on advisory council

Parents and guardians of North Carolina schoolchildren can now apply to become members State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mo Green's parent advisory council.

Applications are open until the end of the day Sept. 15, according to Green's announcement Monday.

Previous Superintendent Catherine Truitt similarly had a parent advisory council. It had 48 members, including nonpublic school parents.

Green's begins a year and a half into his tenure, as a part of his strategic plan, which includes a promise to engage families as "informed partners." He expects to appoint 16 to 24 members. They'll be from across the state's eight geographic regions.

The council won't establish policy but will give insight to the superintendent on educational issues in the state, with a focus on improving public schools.

Council members will serve for two years. Meetings will be quarterly, beginning in November.
