Wake County Animal Center reaches capacity

The Wake County Animal Center on Thursday was caring for 653 animals, and said it has reached capacity.

Officials said 232 animals are currently available for adoption, including 124 dogs, one puppy, 27 cats, 74 kittens, five rabbits and one bird. Since July 1, Wake County said the shelter has taken in 226 animals.

To help free up space in the shelter, Wake County reduced adoption fees to $25 for dogs and $5 for cats through July 19 for an 'Adoption Cup' promotion. Team Cat is in the lead with 218 cat and kitten adoptions, while Team Dog has 129 dog and puppy adoptions.

All adopted pets are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchipped before going home.

You can view available pets online, or by visiting in person. The shelter is open for adoptions from noon to 6 p.m. seven days a week. The Wake County Animal Center is located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive, Raleigh.
