Duke Energy expects increase in power usage but doesn't expect disruptions during heat wave

As temperatures climb during this week’s heat wave, Duke Energy says it is prepared for the increased electricity usage and does not expect any brownouts. However, customers could see higher electric bills if they don’t change their home habits.

If you’re concerned about the cost of your next bill, Duke Energy spokesperson Logan Stewart said bumping up your thermostat a few degrees can make a big difference. The closer the thermostat setting is to the temperature outside, the less work your air conditioning system must do to regulate it.

“We’re ready for the heat,” Stewart said. “Unfortunately, I don’t think this is going to be the last time we’re going to see heat like this, so we do anticipate there’s going to be more situations like this.”

Stewart encouraged customers to prepare now.

“So, I would say definitely take steps now at home, make sure you’re energy efficient, and then just stay as cool as you can this weekend,” Stewart said.

One place people are turning to escape the heat is Buffaloe Lanes South in Raleigh. Visitors said the bowling alley stays cool, even on the hottest days.

“It’s fun. You get good exercise and it’s not so hot inside,” one young bowler said.

A local mother says she even brings a sweatshirt on hot days because of how cold it can be. 

"We've learned that!" Joyce Miller said. "It's nice and cool. It's really worth it."
