Sweets inspired by the world: Hong Kong woman opens Durham bakery highlighting international foods

An array of delicious decadences inspired by the world. Hong Kong native Bonnie Lau said she has always loved indulging in new foods.

“In my heart since I was a child,” Lau said.

After enrolling in culinary school in Paris, she said she traveled the world and sampled foods in more than 60 countries, calling them the “best of the best.”

“It’s really a venture,” she said. “You know, it gives you a taste of ‘oh, wow.”

Lau eventually found her way to North Carolina and, in 2008, opened Miel Bon Bons.

"I fell in love with the South," she said.

She said her fine chocolates and desserts, inspired by her worldly travels, are meticulously handcrafted.

"Each of them's a work of art and an explosion of flavor," said Scott Carle, a customer. 

Lau recently spent 25 hours crafting a single cake designed to resemble an elegant Faberge jewel.

"The quality of the stuff is as good as it gets," Carle continued.

And others seem to think so as well. Miel Bon Bons' famous macarons are ranked among the six best in the world.

The bakery is also known for its croissants and coffee.

Lau said she did not have a business plan when she first started; she just went for it. Now, almost 20 years later, she said she is always looking for something fun.

“I always look for something fun, something creative,” Lau said. “I get up every day looking forward to saying hello to my customers.”
