Hurricanes' Stanley Cup parade: Route, street closures and parking info released

The Stanley Cup is officially back in Raleigh, and a parade celebrating the Carolina Hurricanes' Stanley Cup win will be held Saturday, June 20, in downtown Raleigh.

The Canes arrived on Monday evening at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, with a large group of Caniacs greeting them at the airport as they took the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh.

Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell told WRAL News the parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in downtown Raleigh.

On Tuesday, the city of Raleigh released information on the parade route:

• It begins at the intersection of Hillsborough Street and St. Mary's Street.
• It then proceeds east down Hillsborough Street toward the state Capitol building.
• The parade will turn right and go south on Salisbury Street, then left and east on Morgan Street.
• The parade will then turn right onto Fayetteville Street, heading south.
• The parade ends at Davie Street for a fan rally that takes place after the parade in City Plaza with Fayetteville Street closed for fans to see the rally.

Several downtown area roads will be closed during the celebration.

The city of Raleigh said street closures will begin between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Saturday, similar to those closed for the annual Christmas parade.

The city said closures will continue through Saturday afternoon into the evening for Fayetteville Street along with parts of Hargett, Martin and Davie streets.

The city expects all parking decks and lots in downtown to be in high demand and reach capacity.

An event parking fee of $10 will be in place for city-owned decks with privately-owned lots offering their own varying prices. On-street parking will be free, but will likely be filled very early.

The city of Raleigh plans to release information on high-frequency routes that service downtown through the GoRaleigh system, as well.

Cowell declared Saturday "Carolina Hurricanes Day" in honor of the Canes' run to the second Stanley Cup in franchise history. The team finished the championship run against the Vegas Knights on Sunday night with a dominant 3-0 victory. 

Before the Canes' win, Cowell placed a bet with the mayor of Las Vegas. Her prize? She will get a sequined Hurricanes jersey.

After the Canes' win Sunday night, Gov. Josh Stein spoke to WRAL News from a watch party at Lenovo Center. His son was with him.

He praised Coach Rod Brind'Amour and talked about the team's "incredible talent."

"We could not be more thrilled," Stein said.

He said a celebration will take place near the Governor's Mansion. 

"We're going to have a celebration, [a] big parade starting on Saturday. This is a time for the entire state to come together," Stein said.

On Monday morning, the governor offered an excuse for all fellow Caniacs who stayed up to celebrate.

The last Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup victory parade was held in 2006 after the Canes defeated the Edmonton Oilers. There was a parade at the arena and a separate parade downtown.

The stretch of Hillsborough Street will shut down to traffic at 8 a.m. Saturday.
