A pickup truck driver in Selma faces serious charges, including possible DWI, after turning onto railroad tracks while a train was incoming.

State troopers responded to the crash on Lizzie Mill Road around 11 p.m. They said a pickup truck hauling a large trailer turned south onto the twin sets of  railroad tracks, and the truck was struck head-on by a northbound freight train.

The truck and trailer were dragged hundreds of yards, leaving debris across both sets of tracks. The pickup truck driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker spoke with investigators at the scene while the freight train was delayed for at least a couple of hours. Several CSX freight and Amtrak passenger trains were forced to stop while crews investigated, cleared the tracks, and then tested the crossing guards

The train didn't have any visible damage, but the pickup truck and trailer were destroyed.

The driver of the pickup truck was believed to be driving under the influence and is expected to face serious charges, according to officials.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
