Stanley Cup back in Raleigh, with 'Carolina Hurricanes Day' parade planned for Saturday

The Stanley Cup is officially back in Raleigh, and a parade celebrating the Carolina Hurricanes' Stanley Cup win will be held Saturday, June 20, in downtown Raleigh.

The Canes arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Monday evening, with a large group of Caniacs greeting them at the airport as they took the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh.

Jordan Martinook, one of the first acquisitions by the team after hiring Rod Brind'Amour as head coach, told fans on X that he was planning to be at Teets, a Raleigh bar in the Glenwood South district, to celebrate the Canes' first Stanley Cup in 20 years.

The line to get into the bar Monday night was at least two blocks long. Around 10:30 p.m., the Stanley Cup and the rest of the Carolina Hurricanes arrived at the bar.

Fans gathered around the players, took photos with the cup and drank from it, kicking off a celebration 20 years in the making in Raleigh.

Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell told WRAL News the parade will begin at 11 a.m. in downtown Raleigh. Details on the route are still being finalized. Several downtown area roads will be closed during the celebration.

Cowell declared Saturday as "Carolina Hurricanes Day" in honor of the Canes' run to the second Stanley Cup in franchise history. The team finished the championship run against the Vegas Knights on Sunday night with a dominant 3-0 victory. 

Before the Canes' win, Cowell placed a bet with the mayor of Las Vegas. Her prize? She will get a sequined Hurricanes jersey.

After the Canes' win Sunday night, Gov. Josh Stein spoke to WRAL News from a watch party at Lenovo Center. His son was with him.

He praised Coach Rod Brind'Amour and talked about the team's "incredible talent."

"We could not be more thrilled," Stein said.

He said a celebration will take place near the Governor's Mansion. 

"We're going to have a celebration, [a] big parade starting on Saturday. This is a time for the entire state to come together," Stein said.

On Monday morning, the governor offered an excuse for all fellow Caniacs who stayed up to celebrate.

The last Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup victory parade was held in 2006 after the Canes defeated the Edmonton Oilers. There was a parade at the arena and a separate parade downtown.

The stretch of Hillsborough Street will shut down to traffic at 8 a.m. Saturday.
