Johnston County asks residents to voluntarily conserve water as drought continues

Johnston County is asking residents and businesses to voluntarily conserve water as ongoing drought conditions and low river levels continue to impact the county’s primary water supply.

County leaders say the request is intended to help protect available water resources and ensure there is enough water for essential needs such as drinking water, healthcare services and fire protection.

Officials are encouraging customers to reduce non-essential water use whenever possible. That includes limiting outdoor watering, washing vehicles less often, and fixing leaks around homes and businesses.

The advisory is effective immediately.

While the conservation request is voluntary, customers are reminded that year-round outdoor watering restrictions remain in place under Johnston County’s mandatory conservation policy.

Under those rules:

Odd-numbered addresses may irrigate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Even-numbered addresses may irrigate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
No irrigation is allowed on Mondays.

Residents filling swimming pools should follow the same schedule as their designated irrigation days.

Johnston County Public Utilities said it will continue monitoring river levels, water demand, and drought conditions and provide updates as needed.
