Amtrak passenger train moving again after hitting tractor-trailer in downtown Durham

An Amtrak passenger train hit a tractor-trailer in downtown Durham late Tuesday morning.

Before 10:30 a.m., Sky 5 flew over the crash scene at Ramseur and Pettigrew streets near the Durham County Courthouse. The front of the tractor-trailer was smashed, and the train was stopped on the tracks.

Durham police said the truck was upright but leaking diesel when they arrived, and the driver had no major injuries. No one on the train was injured.

The Durham Fire Department's HAZMAT team cleaned up the diesel spill.

At 11:30 a.m., the 80 Carolinian train was moving again to its next stop in Cary, but Amtrak said further delays may be possible due to a vehicle blocking the tracks south of Cary.

The following message was posted on Amtrak's website:

As of 11:36 AM ET, Train 80 has resumed travel and is currently operating approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes late. Another delay is to be anticipated south of Cary as there is a hold on the tracks due to a unauthorized vehicle blocking the area. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. We sincerely apologize for the delays you are experiencing and appreciate your patience.

At 12 p.m., a WRAL employee waiting for the train confirmed it had arrived in Cary.
