Ask the Meteorologist: What tropical storm hit during the 2006 Stanley Cup Final?

Though the weather is nice for Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, there's a 100% chance of Hurricanes in Raleigh!

In 2006, however, there was actually a tropical storm that moved through the area. It happened on the day of Game 5 vs. Edmonton.

A look back at the hometown weather in 2006

Game 1 weather was great, aside from a little bit of rain. The final score was 5-4 in favor of the Canes. Unfortunately, that was not the case in Game 1 this time around.

The one day that sticks out was Game 5. A whopping 5.64" of rain was measured at RDU. We dug deeper into the cause.

It was Tropical Storm Alberto.

Alberto causes chaos during Stanley Cup Final

Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1. In 2006, it got off to a hot start.

Alberto formed first between Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and the western tip of Cuba. It rode northward toward the Florida Panhandle before coming into the Carolinas.

While there were no reports of wind damage from thunderstorms or tornadoes, Alberto did pack a punch. It dropped a lot of rain over parts of North Carolina and  - more specifically - the Triangle.

The National Weather Service measured more than seven inches of rain. RDU measured nearly half-a-foot.

It was Raleigh's fourth-wettest day on record.

Later that night, the Canes would drop Game 5 to Edmonton by a score of 4-3. Of course, they'd later go on to take the series in Game 7 with a 3-1 win.

We hope there aren't any tropical systems coming our way this time. We do, however, hope to hoist the Hurricanes flag like we did 20 years ago.

LET'S GO CANES!
