Raleigh residents to weigh in on increase in property taxes

People who live in Raleigh can share their thoughts Tuesday on a proposed increase to their property taxes. The city’s new budget proposal would require the average homeowner to pay $67 more each year.

The city of Raleigh is one of several local governments considering raising property taxes.

Monday night, leaders in Wake County approved a 2-cent property tax increase to address a funding shortfall. The approved budget would raise property taxes for the average Wake County homeowner by $90.

Raleigh residents are expected to show up at Raleigh City Hall on Tuesday to voice their opinions on property tax increases in the city.

Raleigh’s city manager has proposed a $1.77 billion budget, which includes a 1.7-cent property tax increase. City leaders say the tax increase will help close a $13 million funding gap and generate revenue to fund new jobs - including 23 needed police officer positions and 12 firefighter positions.

The public is invited to comment at Raleigh City Hall at 7 p.m. City leaders will have to make their final decision before July 1.
