Carrboro controls 4A girls soccer championship in win over Hibriten

DURHAM, N.C. — Carrboro coach Jared Drexler said the season's opening game, a loss, was a wake-up call for his team.

It apparently woke up a monster.

Carrboro didn't lose again the entire 2026 season, culminating with a 1-0 win over Hibriten in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A girls soccer championship at Durham County Memorial Stadium.

The Jaguars ended the year 22-1-3 and now have six state titles, this being the first since 2019.

"I think it humbled us. Maybe we thought we were going to be better than we were," Drexler said. "After that, I think we turned a page and said 'Let's get better' and we did."

The lone goal of the contest came in the 11th minute when Ali Stuntebeck's low cross found Amaliie Reyes, who slotted it in.

Stuntebeck was one of two Carrboro players with six shots and had a game-high three on goal.

For that, she was named MVP.

Carrboro won by a goal but dominated the game.

The Jaguars had a total of 21 shots to Hibriten's two, and Hibriten's two shots came within seconds of each other.

In the 69th minute, Avery Harris hit the crossbar from 40 yards out. A rebound attempt went just over the bar.

Those were the only chances, but it didn't dimish the Panthers' incredible year.

"We've been in battles every round in the playoffs so far," Trevor Allen said.

Hibriten (21-3-2), the West regional champ, was making its second appearance in the state championship, having also finished runner-up in 2004.

Carrboro (22-1-3), the East regional champion, has made eight total trips to the championship game, having also won it all in 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019.

Before the game, each team named a Sportsmanship Award winner. Hibriten's was Bryana Giron and Carrboro's was Annabel Orr.
