DURHAM, N.C. — It was a long time coming, but the day is finally here.

Woods Charter is a N.C. High School Athletic Association girls soccer champion.

The Wolves won the 1A state championship on Thursday at Durham County Stadium with a 3-0 victory over Summit Charter.

Woods Charter was denied in its previous three chances in the state final, but for every prior defeat, there was one Lucy Poitras goal.

Her hat trick — all three goals coming from distance — earned her MVP status and was more than enough to fend off the Bears.

Poitras scored her first goal in the 29th minute on a bending free kick from 25 yards out. She curled it into the upper 90 to the near post. That made it 1-0 at halftime.

The second half saw Poitras take advantage off a bad clear in the 43rd — scoring from 28 yards out — and the 65th — where she scored from 23 yards out after Summit once again couldn't get rid of the scoring threat. A

The Bears tried to defend in numbers and get the ball forward to Victoria Clement on the counterattack, and Summit had success in the first 20 minutes before the Wolves adjusted.

Woods, (22-0), the East regional champion, has made it to four state title matches in the last five years.

Summit (17-2-1), the West regional champion, was one of the state's first charter schools but had not added high school grades or sports until recent years. The Bears will head back to The Plateau with the school's first state runner-up plaque.

Woods Charter was credited with 12 shots in the second half alone and was in the attacking third 39 percent of the game — and across midfield for a whopping 62 percent.

Before the game, each team named a Sportsmanship Award winner. For Woods Charter it was Lucy Poitras and for Summit Charter it was Kayleigh Bonner.
