DURHAM, N.C. — Underneath the bright lights of Durham County Memorial Stadium, Hoggard and Myers Park had tangled at midfield, in the box, and everywhere else on the pitch. Their last stop was at the spot.

And that was where the final moment belonged to the Mustangs.

The Myers Park defeated Hoggard on PKs 1-1 (5-4) to win the N.C. High School Athletic Association 8A state championship on Thursday.

The two sides had played 110 minutes of soccer, and Hoggard was going first on PKs.

The Vikings missed, and Myers Park's Cailin Whitlock scored. Make it 1-0 Mustangs. Myers Park's Lila Yingling and Hoggard's Kylah Long each made saves in the second round — with Long coming in after not having played the whole match.

Hoggard's Brielle Archer put the Vikings on the board, but Myers Park's Amaya Falzarano did the same. It was 2-1 Mustangs after three rounds. Then Hoggard's Aubrie Rogers netted a goal, but Myers Park missed. It was tied 2-2.

Hoggard's Airlie Altman and Myers Park's Isabelle Tremaglio each scored to make it 3-3 after five, after which Vivian Skiba put Hoggard back in front 4-3, and Myers Park's Addie McCarley answered to make it 4-4.

In the seventh and final round, Hoggard missed, opening the moment for freshman Eliza Huffstetler, who coolly netted it for the win.

Both teams had close chances in the first overtime period.

In the first 10 minutes of overtime, Myers Park's Falzarano struck one on a dead run that hit the crossbar and went on, but not over, the goal mouth.

Falzarano, who was a handful for Hoggard's defense at times, was named MVP of the match.

In the second 10 minutes, Hoggard winger Altman's low cross to a streaking Archer was volleyed just over the goal.

Then came both golden goal periods, in which neither team got particularly close, setting up the fateful penalties.

Hoggard opened the game on its front foot and was rewarded in the 20th minute as Graysen Fisher scored at an incredibly tough angle. From left side of the box, she found the opposite side netting.

That 1-0 lead didn't last long after the mandatory water break at the 20-minute mark, however.

A free kick by Brielle Hopkins from midfield was headed out of the box where Myers Park's Isabelle Tremaglio volleyed a line drive into the far corner to equalize.

That score stayed true through halftime.

Myers Park (19-2-3), the West regional champion, was making its third appearance in the championship, having also won it all in 2021 and been runner-up in 2018.

Hoggard (19-2-1), the East regional champion, was in the title gaae for just the second time. The Vikings were also runner-up in 2010.

Before the game, each team named a Sportsmanship Award winner. For Myers Park it was Anna Bilderback and for Hoggard it was Mia Neuwirth.
