WRAL reporting recognized with multiple Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards

WRAL's reporting and commitment to journalism earned the station three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.

For the Television/Large Market division in Region 8 (which includes newsrooms in North Carolina, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia), WRAL won for: Excellence in Innovation, Excellence in Writing and Overall Excellence.  

The "Excellence in Innovation" category recognizes news organizations that innovate their product to enhance the quality of journalism and the audience's understanding of news.  WRAL's "In-Depth" reporting on the 7p news was recognized for its approach in tackling complex subjects and inviting the viewers to be a part of the news coverage of the day as opposed to the traditional news viewer.  This is the second consecutive year WRAL has won the regional Murrow for Excellence in Innovation.  

"Excellence in Writing" is awarded to the entry that "demonstrates excellence in writing that conveys the feeling and significance of events to the listener or viewer."  WRAL's 7pm "In-Depth" segment focusing on the fall-out from late-night host Jimmy Kimmel being taken off the air was recognized with this award.  

WRAL also earned the coveted "Overall Excellence" recognition for the fouth time in the past  decade (2016, 2022, 2023).  The award recognizes the station's overall presence to include breaking news coverage, investigative/enterprise reporting, documentaries and overall digital presence.  

The 2026 regional wins come one year after WRAL won the National Murrow for Continuing Coverage for reporting on Poe Hall.  

The Murrow Awards are the embodiment of the values, principles and standards set forth by Edward R. Murrow, a journalism pioneer who set the standards for the highest quality of broadcast journalism.  Of the awards given to journalists, the Murrow Awards are among the most respected journalism awards in the world.  

Regional winners advance to the national competition, where winners will be announced in August.  National winners will be celebrated at the Murrow Awards Gala on Oct. 12 in New York.
